There is an eye-opening chart that depicts 43 forms of change, such as the death of a relative, earning more money, the birth of a kid, changing one’s diet, acquiring a cold, purchasing a house, having problems at work, receiving a parking citation, and even taking a vacation! Each event is assigned a number. You may use this chart to calculate how much change you’ve experienced in the last year.
If your score is greater than 300, you have an 80% risk of being involved in an accident or being unwell over the next 12 months.

Is this a creative breakthrough or a mental breakdown?
Dr. Al Siebert, a researcher, professor, and author, is a survivor. After his own tragic life-changing incident, he got interested in survivor resiliency. While completing his PhD in clinical psychology at the University of Michigan, he discovered that all of his preparation for a career in mental health had been focused on detecting and treating mental diseases. He had not had a single lecture, let alone a course, on mental health. That understanding prompted him to reconsider his career options.
Al was one of just three psychologists in the country to get a post-doctoral position at the renowned Menninger Foundation, which fostered unconventional thought. Al was overjoyed.
“They declared that my ideas were symptoms of mental illness and canceled my fellowship. They didn’t stop there. They claimed that my thinking was psychotic and had me locked up in the local VA psychiatric hospital,” he later explained to his instructors.
You can understand how this change of events perplexed Al. “They couldn’t distinguish the difference between a creative breakthrough and a mental collapse,” Al recalls of the Menninger Foundation, which had a worldwide reputation for being brilliant psychologists.
“What do you do when you lose your job because the people in power can’t tolerate your ideas? What do you do when you risk being locked up in a mental hospital if you speak out about how to improve established practices? What do you do when people in authority spread false rumors about you? What do you do when the path you’ve been following leads off a cliff and there’s no one to catch you?” Al pondered.
Al’s reaction to hardship provided him with techniques for carving out a unique niche for himself. His discoveries regarding survivor resiliency established him as an international authority, and he has assisted many individuals in turning their worst nightmares into their greatest hours.
Al’s first concern was to figure out how to deal with his new situation. He had to learn how to survive in a hostile environment. His traumatic experience set him on a daring path. He began researching survivors.
Al Siebert began interviewing Holocaust survivors, Bataan Death March survivors, ex-prisoners of war, cancer survivors, and hundreds of others, including World Trade Center and Pentagon terrorist assault survivors. He stayed with some of these folks to learn about their innermost motives and to discover their incredible lifesaving mental tactics.
He has now established himself as the world’s foremost specialist on resilience. He has identified the five critical degrees of resilience. Although we all have them to some extent, the most resilient survivors live by them.
Nearly superhuman
Dr. Al Siebert created ripples in psychological circles twenty years later, in the early 1990s, with his brilliant best-selling book, The Survivor Personality.
