Mindfulness for Mothers

Do you wish you could ditch the drama and be a calm mama?
Guess what? You can slow down your racing mind, stop feeling so frazzled every day, and have a lot more FUN in your busy mama-days (even if you think you don’t EVER have the time to sit and close your eyes like this lady)
Let’s get to some honest talk about motherhood right away. I know we just met, but if I had to guess, I’d say…
:: You love your kids, but sometimes they drive you totally crazy.
:: You feel like you’re being pulled in 87 directions all at once.
:: You feel drained by the battles and whining and all. the. DRAMA.
:: You worry that you don’t spend enough quality time with your kiddos.
:: You wish your life could feel PEACEFUL and EASE-FULL … at least for just a freakin’ moment.
Now, try to imagine what it would be like to…
Now that we’ve known each other a little longer, let me make another guess…
Are you thinking, “OHH… so you’re going to tell me that all I need is some self-care and yoga and mindfulness? I KNOW all that. Been there, done that.”
I hear ya.
I wonder if, like me, YOU have tried things like yoga classes and meditation apps and #allthebooks, but you’re still feeling stuck and defeated and depleted, because…
√ You didn’t have time to get to the yoga studio
√ You tried meditating and you’re pretty sure you did it completely wrong
√ The self-care book said you just need to “Go get a massage!” (#notpossible, amiright?)
√ When you tried to relax in a bubble bath, you just ended up cleaning the bathtub 🙁
Part of the reason why all the traditional self-care advice for moms doesn’t work is that even if you could figure out how to get to yoga, or get a lovely massage, YOU’RE STILL GONNA COME HOME TO ALL THE STUFF THAT STRESSES YOU OUT.
You still have only 24 hours in a day, you still need to help with homework, and you still need to respond to tantrums without losing your *stuff*.
You need something that will help you be calm and nurtured and nourished on a daily basis.
Let me make one more guess:
You’re here right now because you want to be a calm, present, and compassionate mother.
You see images of serene, meditating mamas (like, ahem, the one on the top of this page), and holy sugar, you just wish YOUR experience of motherhood felt like THAT.
You’re here because you’re ready to be the mom you WANT to be… you simply need the guidance, support, and practical tools to get there.
You’re ready to find your supportive village of mothers you can turn to for advice.
You’re ready to discover that you are not the only one who’s struggling.
You’re ready to be done with being frustrated and resentful and stuck.
And how do I know all of this? Well, …
That’s exactly where I was many years ago.
Exhausted. Overwhelmed. And feeling like I was missing out on my own life!
And that’s when I discovered MINDFULNESS.
Mindfulness is a simple practice that can help you soothe your screaming toddler as he throws a fit in the cereal aisle, remain calm when your five-year-old unexpectedly redecorates his bedroom with Sharpies, AND help you be joyfully present for the all the small sweet moments in between.
It can help you be the mom — and the YOU — that you want to be.
(and here’s how the pros define it:)
“Mindfulness is simply being aware of what is happening right now without wishing it were different; enjoying the pleasant without holding on when it changes (which it will); being with the unpleasant without fearing it will always be this way (which it won’t).”
– James Baraz
“When we stay in the present, we make wiser choices and take things less personally.”
– Saki Santorelli
Let me tell you a bit more about how mindfulness transformed my experience of motherhood!
Several years ago, as I struggled with postpartum depression and anxiety, I began to read about mindfulness.
Of course! I thought, I just need to be more mindful! Thank goodness I read this book!
And then I tried to be mindful.
Without any of the meditating….
I didn’t want to waste my precious time sitting on a cushion doing nothing! I mean, I had all this parenting I had to do!
But I realized that mindfulness didn’t work if I just read about it and liked the idea of it.
Once I started meditating…
