Perspectives on Abnormal Psychology

Arichive : Perspectives on Abnormal Psychology
In the case of Woody, 42 year old, Caucasian male, is presenting both physical and mental issues of which an accurate diagnosis has yet to be determined. It appears that there are three theoretical explanations for his abnormal behavior which might also be contributing to those physical symptoms as well. First it is important to have a full medical evaluation to determine whether or not Woody is suffering from any medical condition which is symptomatic of the dizziness, sweaty palms, stomach aches, dry mouth, extreme muscle tension, constant nervousness and shortness of breath. Assuming that Woody is in perfect physical health, one can immediately begin addressing his issues from a psychological point of view. In this case there are no medical reasons that can explain his physical symptoms other than that of some physiological phenomenon. A mental health professional would want to consider the behavioral, cognitive and existential perspectives to determine the best course of treatment strategy (or a combination thereof) to help Woody understand why this is occurring and find his way back to living a well-balanced life without these physical symptoms manifested through a deeply rooted psychological issue.
