Machuca, 2004. Set in 1973 during Chile’s socialist government and Augusto Pinochet’s military coup, the film tells the story of two friends involved in a school integration project. Students will discuss the film’s historical and culturally relevant material through carefully curated vocabulary modules: the figures of Salvador Allende and Augusto Pinochet; the Chilean education system; Chilean society in 1970s; poverty in Chile; and the Chilean Upper Classes. The following grammar presentations will aid students in expressing their ideas, opinions, and reactions to Machuca: a review of present and past subjunctive moods; using the subjunctive with conjunctions of time; using the subjunctive with conjunctions of contingency; double object pronouns; the passive voice; and lo + adjetivo
