I just spent a really enjoyable weekend learning, luxuriating and loving the world we live in today. A small but powerful Florida group known as the Startup Bros, lead by Will Mitchell and Kyle Eschenroeder, hosted the Import Empire Summit at the Ritz Carlton in Orlando, Florida and in my humble opinion; brought the house down.
I’ve attended a ton of events, and have been to many highbrow gatherings centered on online commerce and digital media, but the Startup Bros delivered one of the classiest and throughly thought out events in a long, long time. Will and Kyle typify and have helped shape and define the new online millennial entrepreneur – they are the crown princes of a new online generation.
Their style is what I refer to as the humble hustle, inspiring and grooming newcomers – creating goodwill and wealth for others and themselves. The Startup Bros tagline is You Don’t Need A Job and this truth rang out, over and over, as a cross section of e-commerce entrepreneurs shared their stories.
Collectively they spoke about struggling through life, barely making ends meet and feeling enslaved by their dead end jobs – so much so that one speaker referred to his former place of employment as The Plantation.
They all had stories of desolation … but unanimously expressed the same sense of awe and wonder they experienced when they discovered the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow known as e-Commerce. Their success stories were as diverse as the internet itself.
One by one, Kickstarters, YouTube celebrities, Amazon millionaires and retail arbitrage hustlers took the stage and shared their story of entrepreneurship. How they found prosperity and happiness in developing their own niche and building their business and brand by their bootstraps – one sale, one video & one campaign at a time.
They spoke of building teams, exceeding milestones and finding success as they found themselves online. Collectively they shared; find a compelling product – whether you make it, import it, or you, yourself is the product. Then find an audience for this product by providing value – beyond the product itself.
Several of the speakers were new entrants to the marketplace, created, incubated and accelerated in the Startup Bros Jumpstart community. Others like Edmund James and Elliott Hulse were already stars in their own right, and have joined forces with the Bros to further the online and offline community as a whole.
Think you’re one person and can’t make a difference? Will himself pointed out to his audience, he was one of the youngest people at the event, and yet was leading the pack through development of the jumpstart group and now manifesting its energy into this well planned and throughly engaging event.
It’s hard to not be compelled by individuals who share their darkest moments and their greatest accomplishments in straightforward honest communication with no punches pulled. Honesty, insight, and imagination coupled with a lot of hard work and a few aha moments – these entrepreneurs delivered a unified message.
In today’s world, you don’t have to have a job – you can pursue your passions, become the brand, and build your dreams rather than making someone else’s come true. Will and Kyle are an inspiration and a breath of fresh air in the conference scene. I’m looking forward to the Import Empire Summit.
