Have you ever wondered how to cut stained glass to create a painterly effect? Are you looking for ways to create flowers and other beautiful items of nature into a mosaic? In this online course Yulia Hanansen teaches students a step by step method to create a one-of-a-kind flower mosaic. Yulia teaches this course using the “DOUBLE REVERSE” method. This method entails working on a sticky film that allows students to make changes without using an adhesive till the end of the mosaic process.
Yulia will start from the very first steps: choosing the appropriate flower, and enlarging it to prepare it for the mosaic. She will discuss proper substrates, and the qualities and properties of stained glass. She will go in-depth on color gradients, and values and tones using a gray scale. There is also a thorough lesson on cutting stained glass with all three of the recommended tools. In addition, Yulia will demonstrate her signature brush-stroke cuts, and how she achieves them. Students will learn how each of these cuts can be placed on top of the design to create a realistic flower portrait.
This course is over 3.5 hours of instruction and visual examples, every step is discussed in detail with copious demos and close ups. This piece is completed in the course, so students get the full scope of how to complete the process. There is a lesson on grouting using three different colored grouts, and Yulia shows how she creates a beautiful blended effect using this technique.
Once students have learned Yulia’s techniques on how to cut stained glass in this style, these techniques can be used and repeated for many other projects with natural subjects.

Yulia Hanansen
Yulia Hanansen is a second-generation artist. Having mastered many techniques including mosaics, printmaking, drawing, painting, textiles, and more, Yulia has been professionally involved in mosaic making since 2001. Her Mosaic Sphere Studio, LLC was the first mosaic studio/gallery in the state of Michigan to show and represent mosaic artwork. Studio is currently located in a charming city of Baltimore, Maryland, USA where Yulia works and lives. Mosaics are made for commission, or they can be purchased from a thematically extensive collection of ready-made artworks. Pieces include architectural installations, back-splashes, wall art, public and community projects.
Yulia is a recipient of numerous awards for her mosaic and printmaking artwork, including “Best in Show” prize at Mosaic Arts International. Yulia’s works have been exhibited in the galleries nationwide and internationally: New York City, Philadelphia, Chicago, Seattle, Tacoma, San Francisco, San Diego, Mesa, Miami, Dalas, Ann Arbor, Grado, Italy, and other locations. Work has been collected by patrons in the USA, Canada, Russia, Lithuania, Uzbekistan, Israel, Australia, Italy, South Korea, and South Pole.
Yulia’s latest works represent her fascination with themes of nature, climate change, cosmos, and a connection of human beings to it. She is interested in depicting places and natural phenomena that are only noticeable with the help of technology. Her personal and experimental artwork uses layered glass mosaic technique, where tiles are glued on top of each other. This technique is about the infinity. Like in a brush-stroke painting, there is no end to a number of the brush-strokes that can be applied to the work surface. “Water”, “Fire” and “Starscapes” series have been created in this technique. Yulia also has a passion for more earthly subjects such as flowers, landscapes, and close-ups of nature.
Yulia teaches mosaic art at the mosaic schools and art establishments throughout the US. In addition to mosaic-making Yulia is an adjunct printmaking professor at Towson University, Towson, MD.
